Challenges facing our communities:
Issues among our youth
• 15 - 20% of children present with learning disabilities
• 20% of children meet criteria for a diagnosis of attention deficit disorder (with or without hyperactivity)
• an estimated 5% of children present with known central nervous system disorders secondary to either congenital or prenatal causes
• 20% of all children may experience some type of psychiatric disorder (i.e., conduct disorder, oppositional-defiant disorder, depression, anxiety, etc.)
• 20 - 50% of children with one disorder experience a second co-morbid disorder (30-50% Oppositional-Defiant or Conduct Disorders, 25% anxiety disorders, 20-25% learning disabilities, etc.)
Untreated neuropsychological
and psychological disorders are:
• the leading cause of visits to primary care physicians
• the leading cause of missed days of school including truancy
• consistently identified as the etiology of school-related behavior problems
• associated with poor outcomes within school settings (i.e., drop-outs)
• the second leading cause of death among teenagers (i.e., suicide)
• the primary cause of school shootings
Annual costs of untreated neuropsychological and psychological disorders to children and adolescents within our communities have been estimated to exceed 10% of the local economy. The even greater impact is the generational effect with replication of the same negative family systems and home environments resulting in perpetuation of the same problems.
