Challenges facing our
Juvenile Justice System:
• 65% of youth involved in the juvenile justice system have at least one Axis I psychiatric diagnosis (Diagnostic Statistical Manual – IV)
• 67% of juvenile detainees present with one or more alcohol, drug or mental disorders

• an estimated 70% of incarcerated youth suffer from “disabling (learning disability) conditions”
• 80% of males and 65% of females within residential treatment facilities have a functional reading disorder

• 55% of males and 70% of females within residential treatment facilities present with symptoms consistent with a diagnosis of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
• 92% of female juvenile offenders report a history of sexual or physical abuse
• 24% of female offenders have seriously considered suicide
• 21% of female offenders report at least one psychiatric hospitalization
